The trend started with the arrival of Barbecue Nation which is one of the best restaurant chains in the country. Quite recently, Absolute Barbecues opened its maiden branch in Chennai. No doubt these two are the best barbeques in Chennai, but a handful of new entrants are equally good and costs a lot less.
T Nagar has more barbecue restaurants than any other location in Chennai. Grill Box is a budget live barbecue restaurant with standard menu. In ECR, Basera is one of the oldest restaurant which offers live barbeque as well. With many loyal customers gained over two decades, Basera continues to attract IT professionals from the parallel OMR road too. In the weekends it attracts families and couples alike primarily due to its ambience with many trees making it appear like a drive-in restaurant.
While Coal Barbecue capitalizes on it prime location, it wins over the crowd with fantastic service. The live grill features prawns (called as Moroccan Prawns, only God knows why it’s called so!), paneer, pineapple, kebabs and chef’s recommendation (not so good sometimes). Vegetarian starters are noteworthy in Coal compared to other restaurants. The Chicken wings are definitely new in the menu.
Ice creams are prepared on the go in cold stone customised for each customer preferences. However, it may take a while to get the ice creams. Sigree has good interiors and professional service. They have corporate discounts too. No wonder Sigree went on to become very popular in Bangalore before its arrival in Chennai. A favorite among IT professionals, it has failed to attract other category of customers.
xtreme barbecue (formerly Holy Smoke)is located in Thoraipakkam., OMR road. Consistent with its name, it offers wide choices with some non alcoholic beverages including red wine. Though not a big restaurants by Chennai standards, the ambience is truly international with hard wood table and chairs. The only flip side is the width of the tables not enough to spread more plates, so you have to call the waiters to clean it every now and then.
400 F barbecue is little different than most of its peers. The starters lack prawns, but instead the kadai prawns find its place in main course. Chocolate desserts like brownies and sauces are really great. Though nothing is a tongue twister, the dishes are quite tasty. The interiors are extra ordinary with enough space between tables. They really have very large tables for team outings and group gatherings. For small families they have standard 4 seaters. 400 F has perhaps the largest collection of pastries, salads and sweets for dessert.
Few years back, the food scene in Chennai was dominated by the likes of Kebab factory charging exorbitant rates for kebabs (precious at the time as there were only few who served it in Chennai). While Kebab Factory buffet still costs above Rs. 1500, it doesn’t come anywhere near the choice and service of the new age restaurants like Absolute and Coal.
Holy Grill in Nungambakkam is not so popular but it is however a good place to try. The vegetarian buffet with selective items is commendable. With a niche customer group, it has been keeping the place open and alive which is a boon for pure vegetarians who don’t want to sit next to hardcore flesh eaters.
Ali’s BBQ is housed in Iris Hotel, T Nagar. Conveniently located near Teynampet signal en route Pondy Bazaar, there is no worry about car parking. Ali has some signature dishes like Chicken wings in Chinese style. Better to avoid Shawarma roll in the starter as it would fill your stomach. Normal tandoori chicken is absent in the menu. The prawns are good, but the fish is not that great. In the main course, Biriyani is noteworthy. Baked egg plant comes as a surprise for vegetarians. Pasta is served in live counter. The main disappointment is the dessert with limited choice. Overall it offers value for money.
Finally we have one special mention “Roast and Grills” which stands apart in terms of its great ambience with five star service, furniture and quality. The terrace restaurant with open to sky tables is located beside the pool. An evening spent in the restaurant last for a lifetime. The restaurant also serves A la Carte, but the dishes are quite costly otherwise.
